Saturday, July 16, 2011 Adolf Hitler was ‘ultimate rightist’
Dianne Williamson’s “Holocaust pops up in wrong places” (Sunday Telegram, July 3) admonishes inappropriate analogies to the Holocaust but goes too far in saying such comparisons should never be made.
More importantly, in noting that commentators on both the left and right make those mistakes, she misses the point that the right distorts history and corrupts political literacy when it denigrates someone on the left like President Barack Obama by likening him to Hitler, the ultimate rightist.
The most curious form of that twisted imagery is the right’s accusation that you are like “a Holocaust denier” if you don’t believe their “birther” (Obama’s birthplace) and “truther” (Sept. 11) conspiracy myths. The sense of those analogies is that rightists are disparaging leftists for being like rightists — analogies lacking in sense except as a form of the right projecting its discomforts with its own past onto others.
